Robotic process automation (RPA) reduces the amount of time it takes to perform logical, repetitive tasks, allowing more complex, value-added work to be completed. RPA is software designed specifically to perform manual, regularly occurring tasks, not to be confused with the use of robotic machines to construct a product on an assembly line, which the name may imply.
A major benefit of RPA is that it cuts costs for organizations, increases efficiencies and quality control, and optimizes use of resources. The software works virtually nonstop and should never make a mistake if the coding is correct.
However, the rise of RPA has led to concerns about the possibility of job loss due to RPA adoption. But because it can automate repetitive tasks, implementing RPA can contribute to employee advancement, as the increase in efficiency gives employees the opportunity to focus on higher level tasks that will benefit the enterprise on a larger scale.
To utilize RPA most effectively, it is important to understand practitioners’ awareness levels of it, how well its adoption has saturated the industry and any challenges that exist with implementation of the software. To learn more about these factors, ISACA® conducted a survey collecting data from more than 2,000 respondents.
